The MATADOR brand looks back on a long tradition. In 1905, the MATADOR rubber and balata works were founded in Bratislava, and the first MATADOR tyre was produced there in 1925. The foundation for the tyre plant in Puchov was laid in 1947, and the first tyre came out of the heating presses there as early as 1950. The production programme is constantly being developed and modernised.

Since 1987, the company has had its own research institute. In 1990 the state-owned company was transformed into a joint-stock company and privatised in 1994. Since 1993, production in Puchov has again been carried out under the MATADOR brand.

In 1998, MATADOR and the CONTINENTAL AG Hanover signed an agreement on the foundation of a joint venture to produce truck tyres with headquarters in Puchov/Slovakia.
